Meanwell MDR-20-24 Connector Mistake: HPE Deployment, Small Orders, and How to Turn On a Flip Phone
It started with a tiny order
On a Thursday afternoon in November 2024, I got a purchase request for a communication cabinet upgrade. The client was a small managed-service provider. They needed one Meanwell DC power supply to keep an HPE edge gateway alive during short outages. The order was small: one Meanwell MDR-20-24, a DIN rail, and a few terminal blocks. Total parts: $187. Labor: about two hours. I almost approved it without a second look.
I have been handling communications equipment orders for 11 years. I have personally made and documented 14 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $18,400 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's pre-check list. But that day, I skipped two lines on it. That is all it took.
Everything I had read about Meanwell DC power supplies said the hard part is sizing the wattage. In practice, the hard part is the connector.
The plan looked obvious
The HPE gateway needed 24V DC input. The Meanwell MDR-20-24 is a 20W DIN-rail supply with 24V DC output. According to Meanwell's MDR-20-24 datasheet (accessed January 2025), it delivers 24V DC at 0.84A and uses screw terminals. That matched the gateway's voltage and current draw on paper.
So we ordered it. The supplier shipped it. The electrician showed up on a Friday morning. Then the phone rang.
'The power supply is here,' he said. 'But the connector on the HPE side is not going to work with the terminal block you sent.'
I asked him to send a photo. He did. The Meanwell MDR-20-24 had its screw terminals. The HPE gateway had a 2-pin pluggable connector. We had no mating connector. No adapter. No pigtail.
The HPE gateway was dead. Not damaged. Just unpowered.
The 6-inch problem

Why does a $28 power supply matter? Because the $4,800 gateway behind it will not boot without it.
What we tried while waiting
We tried three workarounds. None worked. First, we looked for a spare terminal block in the van. No luck. Second, we considered cutting the HPE connector and hardwiring it. I killed that idea fast. The gateway was under warranty, and splicing a proprietary connector is a good way to void it. Third, we called two local electrical suppliers. One had a similar connector, but the pin pitch was wrong. Close is not good enough with DC power.
What most people don't realize is that the connector is where small orders die. A $28 part can stop a $4,800 HPE gateway. A two-line checklist item can save a weekend.
Look, I am not blaming Meanwell. The MDR-20-24 did exactly what it was supposed to do. Meanwell is a global brand in power supplies for a reason. But no power supply can guess what connector your HPE device uses. That is on the person building the bill of materials.
The cost of a small order
The final math: $28 for the missing connector, $95 for expedited shipping, $240 for the electrician's second visit, and $249 in after-hours support credits we gave the client for the delay. Total: $612. Plus three days of delay on a deployment that should have taken one morning.
The client was patient. That almost made it worse. They were a small shop. They did not have a spare gateway. They did not have a spare electrician. They had one shot at getting this right, and we missed a detail that cost them a weekend of service availability.
After the third apology call, I realized the mistake was not the connector itself. The mistake was treating a small order as if it had less risk. It did not. It had the same connector risk, the same polarity risk, and the same schedule risk. It just had a smaller invoice.
What I changed
After that Friday, I added three lines to our pre-check list:
- Photograph the device-side connector before ordering any Meanwell DC power supply.
- Confirm polarity, wire gauge, and torque specs for the terminal block.
- Order the mating connector or pigtail with the power supply, not after.
