The Best Mean Well 18V Power Supply Is the One You Don’t Have to Replace
If you’ve ever had to explain to a production manager why the 18V power supply you approved died during a customer’s acceptance test, you know the sinking feeling. I do. That moment is why I spent the last six years rethinking how we buy Mean Well PSUs.

The question that started it all
When I first started as a procurement manager at a 40-person controls company, I assumed all switching power supplies were basically the same. Input voltage, output current, efficiency, done. The lowest quote was the best choice.

Why a Mean Well PSU costs more on paper
I’m not an electrical engineer, so I can’t speak to every circuit design detail. What I can tell you from a procurement perspective is what the “extra” price is paying for.
Mean Well publishes derating curves, safety test reports, and application notes. The budget PSUs I’ve compared typically have a one-page datasheet with a photo and a few bullet points. That difference is a red flag, not a discount.
Datasheets hide more than they show
A budget 18V PSU might list “input range 90-264VAC,” but it may not describe behavior during a brownout. Mean Well lists hold-up time. That number matters when you have a line drop and you don’t want the control loop to reset.
There’s also the temperature question. At 50°C ambient in an enclosed cabinet, a “100W” supply might only derate to 70W. If you sized the load at 25°C, you’re designing in a future failure. Mean Well datasheets include derating curves. The no-name supplier might not.
Technologies only matter if they’re proven
Mean Well’s power supply technologies—active PFC, over-voltage protection, over-temperature protection—sound like marketing. But in a datasheet, they show up as test conditions and curves. I can’t verify those technologies on a bench for every vendor. I can verify that the vendor publishes test reports.
This gets into engineering territory, which isn’t my expertise. I’d recommend having your controls engineer check the EMC report before you commit to a product.
The cost of getting it wrong
In 2022, we ordered 120 budget 18V PSUs at $14 each instead of the Mean Well units quoted at $29 each. Initial savings: $1,800.
Then, by month 14, seven units failed.
Each failure cost us about $380 in labor, shipping, and downtime. Seven failures. Roughly $2,660.
That doesn’t include the client reschedule, the overtime, or the awkward explanation to our quality manager. The “cheaper” PSUs ended up costing more than the Mean Well order would have.
We didn’t have a formal incoming inspection process back then. Cost us. After the third failure, I finally created a 12-point checklist for every batch of power supplies. 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction.
For context, I checked distributor price lists again in January 2025. A Mean Well 18V constant-voltage driver in the 100W class is typically in the $25–40 range, depending on series and quantity. A budget listing is often $10–15. The price gap is real. The information gap is wider.

Personally, I don’t think there’s one universal answer. The best Mean Well PSU for your panel depends on mounting, ambient temperature, and load characteristics. But I can tell you what I check before ordering:
- Look up the exact model’s datasheet, not just a distributor photo.
- Check the derating curve at your enclosure’s maximum temperature.
- Confirm safety certification marks on the actual unit—not just in the quote.
- Buy through an authorized distributor. Counterfeit “Mean Well” units exist.
- Run a simple load test on the first unit before committing a batch to production.
If you ask me, the best 18V power supply is the one you can defend with documentation. A Mean Well PSU isn’t always the answer, but it’s the one I can defend.
Bottom line: the cheapest PSU is the one that doesn’t fail. And the cheapest way to get there is spending five minutes on verification before the product goes into a panel.
