Best Mean Well LED Power Supply for Enclosures: A 5-Step Checklist

If you're putting a Mean Well AC/DC power supply into an enclosure, you don't need another explainer on the difference between AC and DC. You need a working checklist. Here's the one I use when someone says, "I need a Mean Well LED power supply and I need it now." Five steps, in the order that saves you from a reorder.

I'm a sourcing coordinator at a power-distribution company. I've handled 200+ rush orders in nine years, including same-day turnarounds for control panel builders.

1. Confirm voltage, current, and start-up surge

Voltage, current, and—critically—start-up surge. Mean Well builds AC/DC power supplies, LED drivers, battery chargers, and DIN rail power supplies. Within "LED power supply" there are constant-current drivers and constant-voltage drivers. If you pick the wrong kind, the load might light up for a second and then stop.

For a high-voltage LED array, a Mean Well 60V power supply (like the HLG-480H-60) can be the right fit. But read the official datasheet on meanwell.com before you order. The datasheet will show the current adjustment range and whether the unit is constant-current, constant-voltage, or both. Don't rely on the product summary from a reseller.

2. Measure the enclosure before you measure the supply

An "enclosure" is not a spec. The physical space, mounting style, and airflow path all determine which Mean Well works.

If the enclosure is DIN rail based, look at NDR or SDR series. If it's a flat panel, the LRS or HLG series may fit better. Check clearance for wires and terminal blocks, not just the supply's length and width. Here's the thing: many people miss the space above the supply for airflow. The datasheet's mounting clearance notes are not optional.

3. Verify dimming and control before you call

This is where the "best" Mean Well LED power supply is actually chosen. If you need dimming, decide between 0-10V, PWM, and DALI before you call your distributor. "Whatever comes with it" usually becomes a second call later.

I've had customers tell me they don't need dimming, then ask why their 0-10V control switch doesn't work. The driver is the control interface. If the build will connect to a phone app or a building management system, pick a model with the right dimming type—for example, Mean Well's B-type drivers include 3-in-1 dimming.

4. Plan for heat inside the enclosure (the step everyone misses)

The step I see ignored most often is thermal derating. I don't have hard data on industry-wide derating mistakes, but based on our returns from 200+ rush jobs, my sense is that about 20% of "failed" power supplies are actually overheating installations.

Inside an enclosure, ambient temperature can be 10–20°C higher than the room. The derating curve in the datasheet is not a suggestion. What I mean is that the "cheapest" option isn't just about the sticker price—it's about total cost including your time, the risk of delays, and the potential for rework. If the enclosure is sealed metal (think a small control box in direct sun), add ventilation or choose a Mean Well supply with a higher temperature rating.

What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. Newer Mean Well supplies run more efficiently, which means less heat, but that only helps if you actually let the air move. A 60V supply running at 93% efficiency still produces roughly 35W of heat at 480W output—that's enough to cook a cheap enclosure.

5. Order with a time buffer—and call when it matters

The assumption is that rush orders cost more because they're harder. The reality is they cost more because they're unpredictable and disrupt planned workflows. Last quarter alone, we processed 47 rush orders with 95% on-time delivery. The ones that failed had one thing in common: late decisions.

If you're building an enclosure with a hard deadline, order the Mean Well supply before you finalize the mechanicals. If you're already in a rush, get on the phone. Email can sit for hours; a phone call gets you an immediate stock check.

In March 2024, a customer called 36 hours before a deadline needing a 60V power supply. We found a unit in a local warehouse, paid an extra $120 in rush fees on top of the base cost, and delivered. Their alternative was a contract penalty that would have been far worse.

Three mistakes to avoid after the supply arrives

  1. Mounting it with no clearance. Leave at least 20–30mm above and below for airflow.
  2. Forgetting whether the load needs constant current or constant voltage.
  3. Assuming "works on the bench" means "works in the enclosure." Bench tests are usually at 25°C. The enclosure is not.

So, what's the best Mean Well LED power supply? The one that matches your load, fits your enclosure, and ships in time. For a 60V project, that might be the HLG-480H-60. For a control panel, it might be a DIN rail power supply. The fundamentals haven't changed, but the execution has transformed. Check voltage, current, controls, heat, and lead time—in that order.
