How a Campana LED Driver, an RSP-3000-48, and a Blood Pressure Monitor Changed My Power Supply Checklist
Last winter, our facilities manager walked into my office holding a photo of a dark lobby fixture. It was one of those round, bell-shaped pendant lights—a campana LED fixture. He said it had been flickering for a week and then stopped completely. When he pulled the driver out, the label said Mean Well 150W. I thought, fine, I'll order the same model. How hard can that be?

It Started With a Dead Light in the Lobby

I'm not saying every compatible driver is bad. I'm saying I didn't verify compatibility. That's on me.
The return cost me $24 in shipping, plus a 15% restocking fee. Then I ordered the correct Mean Well 150W driver with next-day shipping. My $52 savings turned into about $74 extra out of pocket, and the lobby stayed dark for four more days. Penny wise, pound foolish.
The RSP-3000-48 Reality Check
While that was going on, our IT manager asked me to source a Mean Well RSP-3000-48 for the server room. It powers a 48VDC distribution setup for access control and network equipment.
I searched for meanwell rsp-3000-48 and found the official product page on meanwell.com. Yes, the URL is one word, which always trips me up. The datasheet is listed under Mean Well Holdings and includes the protections, cooling fan, and DC OK relay signal. It's a serious 3000W enclosed power supply.
I also got a quote for a cheaper 48V supply from another reseller. It was about 30% below the Mean Well price. I almost went for it. Then I remembered the LED driver sitting in a return box on my floor.
The RSP-3000-48 uses proper screw terminals for the DC output. The DC OK relay gives us a way to monitor the supply from the building management system. The cheaper unit probably would have worked too. But the cost difference was not worth re-engineering the wiring, changing connectors, or testing whether its protection claims were real.
Bottom line: I bought the Mean Well. Our electrician installed it and said the terminal labels were clear. That's the kind of feedback I actually value.
Blood Pressure Monitors and Power Supplies Have Something in Common
Around the same time, our HR coordinator asked me to buy a blood pressure monitor for the wellness room. The product page didn't worry me. The instruction booklet did. - Physical fit. Width, depth, height, mounting holes, and clearance for fan cooling.
- Environment. Indoor or outdoor? Convection or fan-cooled? Will it be sealed inside an enclosure?
- Source. Official datasheet, authorized distributor, return policy. If a listing has no datasheet, that's a red flag.
I keep this list in my purchasing notes. It takes five minutes. Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction.
Now my spare-parts holdings include two Mean Well 150W drivers for the campana LED fixtures, the RSP-3000-48 that stays in a locked server closet, and a small box of the correct connectors. It's not a lot of inventory, but it's enough to keep the building running.

Bottom line: I don't get paid to take risks with other people's buildings. The cheapest purchase is not always the lowest-cost purchase. And if a $65 blood pressure monitor comes with instructions, a $108 LED driver comes with a datasheet. You'd be surprised how many buyers skip it. I know I did.
